The Problems of Research in Nigerià
(a) Poor Financial Support
Insufficient financial support is a significant obstacle to the advancement of research and successful completion of research initiatives in Nigeria. Despite being conducted by talented and highly qualified researchers, both individually and through research centers, many research projects have been thwarted due to inadequate government funding. Furthermore, companies and other organizations that could assist the government in financing research endeavors have exhibited a lack of commitment in fulfilling this responsibility. Consequently, a multitude of research proposals initiated by individuals, research units in tertiary institutions, and other research organizations have been unable to materialize due to financial constraints. The research allowance provided to academic staff in tertiary institutions is also woefully insufficient to support substantial research projects.
(b) Lack of Awareness
In Nigeria, there is a general lack of awareness among most people regarding the significance of research in a developing country. As a result, the activities of research workers are often undervalued, and they do not receive adequate cooperation from their respondents during fieldwork and data collection. It is unfortunate that sometimes, when essential data required for a study must be obtained from individuals occupying high positions in government ministries, parastatals, or companies, these individuals are often unwilling to provide the necessary information.
(c) Poor Statistical Background
Numerous research workers lack proficiency in utilizing appropriate statistical tools for analyzing and interpreting data. The incorrect application of statistical methods during data analysis and hypothesis testing often leads to erroneous conclusions and inferences.
(d) Lack of Facilities and Modern Communication Network.
In certain instances, research workers must travel long distances to obtain data. However, inadequate transportation infrastructure can impede their progress and be a source of frustration. Nonetheless, the availability of modern communication facilities such as telephones, fax machines, and email can be useful in reaching remote areas and addressing this challenge.
Additionally, the unavailability or poor condition of equipment and materials, especially in scientific research, can pose significant difficulties. Outdated or non-existent laboratory equipment can result in errors in research studies as researchers may have to improvise materials to conduct their studies.
(e) Lack of Zeal and Perseverance
Many researchers lack the motivation to persist in their pursuit of discovering new ideas, particularly in the presence of difficulties and setbacks. When confronted with numerous problems and constraints, such researchers tend to abandon their studies and shift their focus to less challenging issues. However, it is noteworthy that earlier researchers accomplished significant discoveries due to their resolute determination to succeed, even in the absence of research grants or other forms of encouragement.
