Early Life And Education
Black Sherif, also known as Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kweku Frimpong, was born and raised in Konongo, Ghana.
He grew up in a challenging environment as the area was a ghetto. When he was ten years old, he went to stay with his aunt and other relatives while his parents stayed overseas.
As he grew up in the Konongo community, Black Sherif developed an interest in music after being exposed to Afrobeat from Nigerian and Ghanaian artists via the radio.
He started rapping and doing freestyle in his neighborhood and school, becoming popular within the community and participating in talent show contests in Konongo.
Although he was a dancer in his early years, Black Sherif stopped dancing and focused on his music career.
He gained a reputation as a popular teenager in Konongo, and his fame spread to other regions of Kumasi.
Black Sherif completed his primary education in an Islamic school in Kononko-Zongo and his secondary school education at Kumasi Academy in 2019.
He gained admission to the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) to study statistics but later quit. In January 2022, he announced that he had been admitted to the University of Ghana (UG) to study marketing.

Career
Black Sherif initially pursued a career in dancing but eventually decided to pursue music while still in secondary school. With a growing interest in music, he used his free periods to write songs and look for a studio to record his music.
In 2019, shortly after graduating from secondary school, Black Sherif released his debut single “Cry For Me,” which gained attention in the Ghanaian music industry and helped him gain fans.
He followed up with another hit single, “Money,” in 2020, which gained national awareness and became popular in several West African countries, including Nigeria.
Since then, Black Sherif has become one of Africa’s most talented young rappers, consistently dropping songs back to back.
In May 2021, he released another hit song, “First Sermon,” which introduced him to the continent of Africa and garnered recognition from popular Ghanaian musicians like Hammer and Sarkodie.
Shortly after, he released the follow-up single, “Second Sermon.”
“Second Sermon” caught the attention of top African artist Burna Boy, who featured on the remix released on December 8, 2021.
The remix became one of the best songs of 2021 in Nigeria and Ghana, rising to the top of the music charts. The music video was released in February 2022.
As a result of this success, Black Sherif was invited to perform at the 2021 MTN FA Cup final match between Accra Heart of Oak and Ashanti Gold SC in Ghana.
On March 31, 2022, Black Sherif released “Kwaku The Traveller,” which became a massive hit, reaching number 1 on the Ghanaian and Nigerian Apple Music charts.
This set him a record as the first Ghanaian artist to have a solo single on the Nigeria Apple Music Chart. He also performed at the 3Music Awards ceremony in Ghana in March 2022, entertaining an excited audience.
Controversies
In May 2022, Black Sherif, along with Smallgod, Stonebwoy, and Amaarae, had the opportunity to meet with Kendrick Lamar during his visit to Ghana.
The group attended a private album party in Accra with the American rapper.
However, on April 11, 2022, Black Sherif found himself facing legal troubles. The CEO of Wayne’s Chavis Consult, Shadrach Agyei Owusu, filed a lawsuit against the rising star for an alleged breach of contract.
Owusu claimed that Black Sherif had abandoned him after he invested in his career. The court case sought about four reliefs from Black Sherif.
As a result, the Accra High Court (Commercial Division) issued an order preventing Black Sherif from performing music released during his old contract.

Personal Life
Black Sherif has expressed his intention to concentrate on his music career and education, and therefore, he is not prioritizing dating at the moment.
Although he is currently single, he hopes to start a family someday. He has maintained a close friendship with Poco Lee, a famous Nigerian dancer who introduced him to Burna Boy, leading to their collaboration on the remix of “Second Sermon”.
